What changed

Barclaycard Payments has made Visa's Unified Checkout available to its merchant customers in the United Kingdom, The Paypers reported on 14 October 2026. Barclaycard is distributing it through Smartpay Fuse, its online payment gateway, so merchants can reach several acceptance options through one integration. The checkout covers card payments, Click to Pay and digital wallets, as well as Pay by Link and invoicing. It also includes Visa's built-in value-added services. Visa describes it as low-code, modular and API-driven, so merchants can switch on new payment experiences without a large development project and change the checkout later as customer habits shift. Both companies say the goals are fewer abandoned checkouts, more consistent customer journeys, stronger security and better visibility of payments. Neither company has given pricing, a list of launch merchants or performance figures. The announcement also does not say which wallets are supported or whether non-card methods such as pay by bank are on the roadmap. For UK online merchants, the change matters because Barclaycard is one of the country's largest acquirers. A packaged checkout from the acquirer lowers the effort needed to add Click to Pay and wallets, which some smaller merchants have held off on because each needed its own integration. Merchants still need to weigh the convenience of a network-supplied checkout against its limits. Unified Checkout is built around Visa's tools, so they should check how it handles other card brands, local methods and the routing choices they would have with an independent gateway or orchestration layer.
