Data & methodology

What pay.wiki covers, where the data comes from, how certain it is, and how to reuse it.

What we cover

Live counts: 579 payment methods, 850 banks, 154 currencies, 192 sovereign states. Plus country market reports, a news feed of scheme, regulation, launch, withdrawal and incident news, and a calendar of payment events and key dates.

Where the data comes from

We prefer primary sources: scheme rulebooks and websites, central banks, regulators' registers, bank tariffs and provider documentation. Where those are silent, we use reputable trade reporting and industry research. General references such as Wikipedia are used for background. Each entry lists its sources.

How certain each figure is

  • Adoption shares. Published: taken directly from the named source. Derived: calculated from published figures, for example a payment category's share multiplied by a method's share of that category. Markets without data are shown as awaiting data; we never estimate them.
  • Transaction volumes. Each figure is labelled measured (reported by the operator or a regulator), modelled (estimated from reported totals) or assumed (a stated assumption). We do not add up figures that are not comparable.
  • Dates. Calendar items marked TBA or provisional are not confirmed by the organiser.
  • Exchange rates. Indicative daily rates from ExchangeRate-API, updated once a day at 01:15 UTC. Not for transactions.

How we keep it current

Catalogue changes are checked against their sources before we publish them. News items are written from primary announcements and reviewed before they go live. Exchange rates update daily.

Corrections

Use "Suggest an edit" on an entry, or email support@pay.wiki with a source. We check it against the source, fix confirmed errors and reply to you.

Independence

No one can pay to be listed, ranked or to change an entry. See How pay.wiki makes money.

Machine-readable access

  • /llms.txt: an index for AI assistants. /llms-full.txt lists every entity in one file.
  • Add .md to any page address for a Markdown version, for example /payment-methods/pix.md. Section indexes: /payment-methods.md, /banks.md, /countries.md, /currencies.md, /news.md, /calendar.md.
  • News as RSS: /news/feed.xml.
  • Identifiers such as pm_56 are stable. Page addresses use names and can change; old addresses redirect.
  • There is no public API yet. If you need structured access, write to connect@pay.wiki.

Reuse and citation

Short extracts and individual figures are free to use with the credit "Source: pay.wiki" and a link. Bulk or commercial reuse needs a licence; exchange rates and third-party images are excluded (see section 5 of the Terms of service). Cite as: "Source: pay.wiki, page title, accessed date, https://pay.wiki/…".
