Canada's Real-Time Rail is set to open without any of the Big Six banks

Sources say none of Canada's largest banks are lined up for the first phase of the long-delayed instant rail, due to launch in Q4 2026.

What changed

Canada's Real-Time Rail, the instant, always-on payment system Payments Canada has been building since 2015, looks likely to go live in its first phase without any of the country's six largest banks, BetaKit reported on 8 October 2026, citing four people in the fintech sector. Payments Canada declined to name its phase-one participants, and the banks either did not reply or referred questions to the Canadian Bankers Association, which said only that it backs a phased approach. The published timeline puts an initial launch in the fourth quarter of 2026, Interac e-Transfer clearing and settlement participants joining in the first and second quarters of 2027, and full capacity in the third quarter of 2027. The finance department has said it wants all major institutions on the rail by summer 2027, though banks are not currently obliged to join. Fintechs such as Wealthsimple, Koho and Float have become Payments Canada members, a precondition for taking part. The rail is designed to settle payments of up to CAD 100,000 instantly, well above the usual Interac e-Transfer limits for consumers and businesses. Canada remains the only G7 country without an instant payment system, and the project has slipped repeatedly from an original 2019 target. Critics quoted in the report questioned how useful a rail can be at launch if most Canadians bank where it is not yet available. For merchants the practical effect is timing. Canada's open banking plans tie payment initiation, the write access that would enable pay-by-bank at checkout, to the rail being live and widely used, with a mid-2027 target. If the big banks arrive late, account-to-account checkout and instant payouts for Canadian customers will most likely slip with them, and cards and Interac remain the working options into 2027.

What merchants must do

Keep cards and Interac as your Canadian checkout plan through 2027 and do not budget for pay-by-bank savings before the major banks join. Ask Canadian PSPs which phase-one participants they connect to and when instant payouts to customers' banks will cover the Big Six.
