What changed

Finix, a US payment processor, announced on 15 October that it has integrated Cash App Pay and Afterpay. Eligible US businesses processing with Finix can now offer both methods, with payments and refunds handled through their existing Finix account. Both are available only for US-based businesses and transactions in US dollars, and Finix asks merchants to contact it about eligibility. No pricing was disclosed. Cash App Pay lets shoppers pay with a tap or by scanning a QR code without typing card details. Finix says it supports one-time and recurring payments, and shoppers can save it for repeat purchases and subscriptions. Afterpay lets customers split eligible purchases into four interest-free payments, with late fees possible, and it is open to US residents aged 18 and over. Both methods are owned by Block. They give shoppers a stored, card-free way to pay and a pay-later option, and they reach Cash App's large consumer base, which has a younger profile than typical card wallets. Until now, many smaller merchants and software platforms could only offer these methods through larger gateways or direct integrations. For online merchants, the integration matters most during the holiday peak, when pay-later demand rises and checkout speed affects conversion. Software platforms that embed Finix can also pass the methods through to their own merchants. As with any BNPL option, the merchant fee is usually higher than standard card processing, so the cost needs weighing against any gains in basket size and conversion.

What merchants must do

If you process with Finix, ask for the Cash App Pay and Afterpay fees and your eligibility before the holiday peak. Test Afterpay on higher-value baskets and Cash App Pay on mobile checkout, and compare conversion against cards. Check that refunds and recurring billing for both methods flow correctly into your reconciliation.
