Google rolls out Universal Cart in the US with Google Pay checkout across Search and Gemini
Shoppers in the US can now collect items from many retailers in one Google cart and pay with Google Pay or hand the cart to the merchant's own site.

What changed
Google began rolling out Universal Cart in the United States on 15 October 2026. It works in Google Search, including AI Mode, and in the Gemini app. Shoppers can save products from several retailers into one persistent cart, get alerts when prices drop or items come back in stock, see relevant promo codes and get suggestions on which card in Google Wallet earns the most rewards.
Checkout runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). For many participating stores, shoppers can pay with Google Pay inside the cart in a few taps. Elsewhere, the cart passes the items to the merchant's own basket and the order is finished on the retailer's site. Google says merchants remain the seller of record and handle order confirmation and customer support. Named participants include Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify merchants.
Google first showed the cart at I/O in May. Reporting by PPC Land says Shopify stores were matched to Merchant Center and switched on by default in September unless they opted out. It also says Google's Merchant Center hub now lets eligible sellers choose cart transfer, native checkout on Google or identity linking, with native checkout limited to the US. YouTube and Gmail, which were shown at I/O, are not part of this launch, and Canada and Australia are reported to be pushed back to 2027.
For online merchants this moves more of the shopping journey onto Google before the shopper reaches the merchant's site. The product data a merchant sends, and whether they accept Google Pay tokens, will decide whether they can be bought from inside the cart. Google has not published fees, ranking rules or how promo codes are chosen.
